The Peer Mentor Program is designed to support new students as they acclimate to life on campus, build meaningful relationships, engage with the campus community, and achieve both academic and personal success. This program connects incoming students with upper-level mentors who guide them through their first year or transition to UW-Platteville.

Mentorship: A Supportive Transition to College Life

Starting college or transferring to a new institution can be both exciting and challenging. Whether it's managing academics, meeting new people, or navigating campus and the local community, it is not uncommon for students to struggle during this period of adjustment. Our Peer Mentor Program matches new students (mentees) with upper-level students (mentors) who serve as experienced and knowledgeable resources.

How the Peer Mentor Program Helps

Engaging with a peer mentor provides numerous benefits for first year and transfer students:

  • Enhances Sense of Belonging
Mentees will feel a deeper connection to the campus and community, helping them develop a sense of belonging and making UW-Platteville feel like home.
  • Expands Social and Academic Networks
Mentees will gain access to a broader network of social and academic opportunities.
  • Provides Personal Support
Having a trusted peer mentor offers a reliable source of support for academic challenges, social concerns, or just adjusting to college life in general.
  • Access to Resources
Peer mentors help students identify and navigate the many resources available on campus, from academic support services to extracurricular opportunities, ensuring students can access the help they need when they need it.

How the Program Works

The Peer Mentor Program pairs each mentee with a mentor prior to arriving on campus who will reach out via email and text to share helpful resources, tips for success, reminders, and event invitations. Mentors also check in periodically to make sure mentees feel supported. Mentees can always reach out to their mentor with questions, concerns, or just to chat. It's a great opportunity for both mentors and mentees to grow and develop valuable skills.

Become a Mentor

Being a mentor is not only about helping others—it’s an opportunity for personal growth too! Mentors develop leadership skills, improve communication abilities, and experience the fulfillment of guiding a new student through their transition. It’s a rewarding way to give back to the UW-Platteville community.
