The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Office of Professional Program Support would like to congratulate the 2022-23 distance education scholarships winners. The scholarships help cover tuition costs for students in online distance education programs.

Matthew Van Egeren, Master of Science in Engineering, was awarded the Dawn Drake Excellence in Distance Education Scholarship. The scholarship was created in recognition of former executive director Dawn Drake, who was instrumental in developing and growing UW-Platteville’s online programs. Drake’s true passion was education, and she desired to make it available to as many as possible. The scholarship award is $750.

Callie Weber, Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, received the Ruth Miller Distance Education Challenge Scholarship, with an award of $750. The scholarship is available to undergraduate students seeking a business degree. Miller was one of the university’s first distance education graduates. She created the scholarship to help distance education students finish their degrees.

Julie Anderson, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, was awarded the Gary Apperson Memorial Scholarship, with an award of $1,000. Apperson received his Master of Science in Criminal Justice from the university in 2006, and then taught for the criminal justice program. His family, friends, and colleagues created the scholarship after his death in 2017 to carry on his legacy and enthusiasm for education and mentoring. This scholarship recognizes students who share Apperson’s passion for education, criminal justice, and giving back to the community.

Sammy Schermerhorn, Master of Science in Applied Biotechnology, received the Dion D. Shaw Disability in Distance Education for Graduate Students and was awarded $750. Shaw received his Master of Science in Project Management from UW-Platteville in 2015. His scholarship was created to recognize his passion for education and desire to make it more affordable for students with documented disabilities.
