How to fund your program
Scholarships and grants
Be sure to plan ahead! Many scholarships and grants have early application deadlines, so it is important to plan and apply early.
Cost comparisons
Determining how to fund an education abroad experience is a major consideration for students, so planning your finances early can help alleviate financial concerns later. While there are additional costs incurred with many education abroad programs, many students do not consider how much they already spend for a semester here in the U.S. Comparing costs can often help determine how realistic the program cost is for personal budgets.
-
Home Institution
First find the costs for an average semester here in the U.S. for the following items. Use your current billing, federal aid, and grants and scholarships.
- Tuition & Fees
- Room
- Meals
- Transportation
- Personal Expenses**
Now subtract any financial aid, grants, and scholarship from the total.
Education Abroad Program
Next find your program(s) of interest online and review the information on what is and is not included with the program cost. Remember there are many factors which contribute to the cost of an education abroad program, including: the cost of living in the city/country, the tuition of the institution abroad, the currency exchange rate, airfare, accommodation style, and extras included into the program fee (e.g. excursions, activities). Estimate the program and out-of-pocket costs to the best of your knowledge for the following items.
- Tuition & Fees
- EA Administration Fee*
- Passport & Visa
- Room
- Meals
- Transportation
- Personal Expenses**
Consult your financial aid office to determine if all of your current financial aid, grants, and scholarships can be applied to a program abroad. See what scholarships and grants are available for education abroad participants. Once you have that information, subtract the available financial aid from the program total cost.
Be sure to consider a variety of locations and program types to compare costs and find a program that is of interest and within your budget.
*The EA Administration Fee includes the following: general operating expenses, CISI Insurance (for UW-Platteville sponsored study abroad and exchange programs only), and support from UW-Platteville Education Abroad staff before, during, and after your program abroad. This fee does not apply to all programs and the amount will vary; please consult the UW-Platteville Education Abroad Office for more information.
** Personal Expenses can include (but are not limited to): books and school supplies, optional excursions, shopping, souvenirs, entry fees (to museums, events, etc.), in-country transportation, and personal travel before/after the program or during semester breaks.
