From eligibility and applications to financial aid, housing, and deposits, this page outlines what you need to know before, during, and after applying.
Because programs differ (Main, Exchange, Faculty-Led, and Affiliate), some answers may vary slightly by program type. Your Education Abroad advisor can help clarify any details specific to your experience.

Eligibility & Program Availability

Eligibility requirements vary by program. If you’re unsure, email the Education Abroad Office for confirmation.

- Short-Term Faculty-Led programs: Not offered every year.
- Affiliate programs: Usually offered each term, but confirm with the provider.

Application Process

Requirements vary by program but typically include:
- Statement of purpose
- Official transcript
- Application fee
- Letters of recommendation
- Course selection
- Required institutional forms
All materials are submitted through the Education Abroad online application portal.

Students may apply to only one program per term. Advisors can help you determine the best fit.

Professors, academic advisors, coaches, or employers. At least one letter must come from a professor or academic advisor.

Completed applications are typically reviewed within one week.
Some programs are approved by UW-Platteville; others require final approval from the host institution or provider.
Passports & Visas

Yes, a passport copy is required. If you don’t yet have one, you may apply while completing your study abroad application. Notify the office that your passport is pending.
Be sure to apply for a passport book, not a passport card.

Visa requirements vary by country. You are responsible for securing any required visas, though guidance will be provided.
Academics & Course Planning

Meet with your academic advisor before applying. Courses should:
- Count toward degree requirements
- Fit your academic plan
- Align with available offerings abroad
Use your PASS “My Academic Requirements” tool to review remaining graduation requirements.
Financial Aid & Scholarships

Yes. Study abroad is considered an academic program, so scholarships, grants, and loans apply.
Additional program costs are incorporated into your semester budget.

Because studying abroad increases your cost of attendance, you may become eligible. Visit the Financial Aid Office to explore options.

Yes. Scholarships are offered through UW-Platteville and external providers. Visit the Scholarships page for deadlines and details.
Program Costs & Fees

Costs vary by location and duration. Longer programs are often more cost-effective due to airfare being a fixed expense.
If pricing is unclear, contact the Education Abroad Office or program provider.

No. The application fee is nonrefundable.

Within two weeks of official acceptance into a Main or Exchange program.

Administrative fees are separate from tuition and program costs.

All fees are non-refundable. Students withdrawing more than two weeks after acceptance remain financially responsible for applicable fees.

Yes. Affiliate providers may charge their own fees. Students should review provider websites carefully.
Housing in Platteville

- On-campus housing: Contact Residence Life about your options.
- Off-campus housing: Work directly with your landlord or roommates. Subleasing may be an option.
The Education Abroad Office does not assist with housing or subletters.
Accommodations

Notify the Education Abroad Office early. If you work with Disability Services, you may sign a consent form to allow coordination.
Advance planning increases the likelihood that accommodations can be arranged.
Deadlines

- Fall - Early March
- Summer - Early April
- Winter/Spring - Early October
For Affiliate programs:
- Follow provider deadlines.
- UW-Platteville application is due two weeks before the provider deadline.
Short-Term Faculty-Led
- Summer: February 1
- Winterim: October 1
- Spring Break: November 15
