(Past) Wading into the Driftless: Temperature and Water Chemistry Patterns of Karst Springs in Southwest Wisconsin

Engineering Seminar Series
Presenter: Dr. James Berglund, University of Wisconsin-Platteville

This seminar will explore the goals and initial findings of research by Dr. James Berglund and research student Maggie Foster on monitoring karst springs in southwest Wisconsin’s Driftless Area. Due to the unique geology and hydrology associated with karst landscapes, characterized by sinkholes, caves, and springs, frequent sampling and high-resolution monitoring of springs are necessary to fully understand and manage these sensitive hydrogeologic systems.

About the presenter
James Berglund is an Assistant Professor of Geology in the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at UW-Platteville. He received his PhD in Geoscience from Temple University in 2019, an MS in Geospatial Science in Geology from Missouri State University in 2012, and a BS in Geology from Winona State University in 2010. Prior to UW-Platteville, he was a research hydrogeologist for the Montana Bureau of Mines & Geology, and a groundwater protection hydrologist for the Minnesota Department of Health.

About the Engineering Seminar Series
The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Engineering Seminar Series is offered on campus and via zoom. Free and open to the public, these presentations showcase the plan, design, construction, and maintenance of real-world engineering projects and how they change our community. Attendees are eligible for one professional development hour.
