(Past) Settlement Remediation at the Dubuque Ice Arena
Engineering Seminar Series
Presenter: Michael R. Shimkus, P.E., S.E., WHKS
The Dubuque Ice Arena is a 3,000-seat arena and is home to the USHL Dubuque Fighting Saints hockey team. The Arena was constructed in 2010 on Chaplain Schmitt Island, an area that was previously used as a landfill. After the facility began experiencing failing connections between bearing walls and bleacher support beams, it was discovered that while the main building structure was supported on deep foundations, other building elements were not supported and causing settlement issues. The building-wide geostabilization project included structural analysis and investigation, laser scanning, settlement monitoring, stakeholder engagement, ground-penetrating radar, urethane slab-jacking, and compaction grouting. The project was completed on an accelerated timeline in 2022, during the hockey off-season.
