Biography
Professor Joshua Stine (he/they) is an avid performer and teacher and is currently Adjunct Professor of Flute at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Joshua is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Iowa in Flute Performance with a secondary focus in Queer Musicology. Prior to the University of Iowa, Joshua attended Bowling Green State University where he received his Master of Music Performance and the University of South Carolina where he received his Bachelor of Music Performance.
Outside of school, Joshua has been seen and placed in various competitions throughout the country including the Myrna Brown Young Artist Competition Semi-Finals, the Central Ohio Flute Association's Young Artist and Collegiate Artist competitions, the Flute Society of Kentucky's Quartet, Young Artist, and Collegiate Artist competitions, the Schubert Club annual competition, and the Can-American Flute Symposium Masterclass competition, to name a few. Joshua was also featured on the GRAMMY-nominated orchestral album, Sila: The Breath of the World by Pulitzer-prize winning composer, John Luther Adams.
A proponent of new music, Joshua has premiered and commissioned several new works for his flute and saxophone duo, DuoR2, his flute duo, Duo GO, as well as his flute trio, Huo Guo Trio. His work in this field is to serve and promote under-represented communities in the classical music world. His newest project includes a partnership with the American Composers Alliance to champion the flute music from their Missing Voices collection, a project designed to celebrate composers who were lost to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Professor Stine's final DMA project, Mere Mortals: An Exploration of Queer Experience Through Flute Compositions, joins alongside his work with the ACA to showcase queer experience and narrative through his own eyes, as well as through the lens of various composers.
In addition to their performing and commissioning work, Professor Stine is also a sought-after guest artist for masterclasses and recitals throughout music programs across the country. Joshua's principal teachers include, Professor Nicole Esposito, Tim Munro, Dr. Conor Nelson, and Dr. Jennifer Parker-Harley.
