Biography

About

I bring 30+ years practical experience in the tourism industry and theory to the classroom.  My course load revolves primarily around tourism and event planning.  I love immersing students in their educational environments, using reflective and experiential learning practices to aid understanding and illustration of theoretical points.

I have traveled to 46 of the continental US states and lived in Scotland for 6.5 years during my tenure as a Ph.D. student at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow Scotland. My research interests focus on tourism, technology, and relationship management. They include marketing, branding, e-Marketing, e-Branding, e-Tourism, value chain management, and consumer behavior.  My main focus region is Scotland.

Teaching Philosophy

How do I think learning occurs?

I believe that learning, education is about gaining insight into past/present knowledge but, also, about gaining confidence to use information in your own daily lives to achieve professional/personal goals and aims.  I believe we seek understanding to develop a particular lifestyle that benefits ourselves as well as others.  I believe that anything is an achievement, even a degree or complete failure.  We must, as individuals, see the good in any situation and capitalize on the knowledge.

How can I facilitate this process?  How have I come to these conclusions?

There have been several ways in which I have facilitated and understood this process.  One has been in the capacity of my professional career.  I have always relished the challenge of training others to be their best in their jobs.  I have met success and failure and must remember that this is a learning process for me as well.   I learn with each situation how to adapt to change and acquire the knowledge and skills to further myself and others.

Second, in my capacity as a student and instructor, I have learned that the classroom is always unique.  Observing, listening, being able to adapt to the constant change of the environment is a must.  We are all individuals with distinctive personalities and learning is different for everyone.  Teaching is about service to the students, to the academic environment and to yourself; it is a fine balance.
