Professional Background

Associate Professor Marcia J. Harr Bailey, Ph.D. has served as a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville since the fall semester of 2013 teaching courses in business and entrepreneurship.  She has management experience in the retail and human services industries as well as her experience as a social entrepreneur and startup founder.

While working on her doctoral dissertation, Dr. Harr Bailey performed her data collection through a Fulbright U.S. Student grant to Laos funded through the U.S. Department of State. Later, her research and work on higher education service-learning as grassroots development spurred the creation of a nonprofit project called Poom Loom. The project connects Laotian college students with rural villagers to address community needs while students gain experience and learn about leadership, sustainable development, and entrepreneurship. Dr. Harr Bailey has connected UW-Platteville students with the college students she works with in Laos through short-term faculty led (STFL) study abroad programs to Thailand and Laos during summer sessions.

Dr. Harr Bailey is passionate about hands on learning through experiential education.  In 2017-18, she was a Wisconsin Teaching Fellow for her work on Mindful Entrepreneurship Training for Action (META Mindset) entrepreneurship education curriculum. In 2020, she was a semi-finalist for the WiSys AppStart Challenge for META Mindset.  During 2021, she participated in the first cohort of the IDEA Hub Accelerator and in fall 2021 she received a grant through the Ideadvance Seed Fund to migrate her entrepreneurship mindset curriculum from paper to digital format.  This spurred the launch of Prototype Your Life LLC.  She is working with a team of students and faculty at UW-Platteville to build and test Prototype Your Life, a digital tool that helps aspiring startup founders develop entrepreneurship mindset traits and skillsets.

Another interesting point that Dr. Harr Bailey likes to share is that her family has a history with this campus...her parents met at UW-Platteville!  They are alumni in agricultural science (Jack Harr) and elementary education (Lois Larsen Harr).
