Teacher education courses require many hours of classroom observation, service learning, and student teaching in public and private schools. The University of Wisconsin-Platteville requires all students applying for student teaching to get a criminal background check by our approved vendor.

Typically, the first background check will take place during TEACHING 1230 introduction to education or HHP 2320 introduction to physical education and health. Instructions will be provided by the instructor of the class. Background checks are good for two years. The initial cost of a background check is $24 and will be collected via course fees. Please contact Clinical Experiences if you have any questions.

Results

Background check results may take anywhere from a day to several weeks to be completed. Things that may delay the results include:

  • If you have a criminal record.
  • If you have lived in more than one state. The background check investigates all known addresses where you have lived.
  • If you have submitted a request with incorrect information. If this happens, you will be sent an email asking you to verify the information in question. That information could include transposing a number in your Social Security number, using a shortened version of your birth name, or putting the wrong date of your birth.
