World Language Test-out Options

Do you have previous experience in a language we offer?

If yes, be sure to take the World Language Placement Test in Spanish or German. You could receive up to 16 FREE credits - a full semester of free credits that gets you that much closer to graduation.

Taking the placement test is a great idea while your high school language is still fresh in your mind. You may be able to earn retroactive credits by taking just one class or even earn enough retroactive credits to obtain a language minor with only a few additional classes.

Either way, taking the World Language Placement Test is a smart move! Retroactive credits are available to all degree-seeking undergraduates who take a non-English language, no matter whether you intend to major or minor in a language.

If you feel that your placement test score does not accurately reflect your abilities, please contact the Humanities department to meet with a professor.

How?

  • Take the language placement test in Spanish or German. Visit the New Student Experience Placement Testing page for more information on how to register for the placement test.
  • Your academic advisor will discuss your placement test results with you and assist you in enrolling in the language class you place into.
  • If you pass the language class you placed into with a B- or better, you will receive up to 16 retroactive credits for the first- and second-year language courses you skipped.

Example: If you test into and take Spanish 2940, and receive a grade of B- or better, you would receive credit for the following courses, fulfill your World Languages degree requirements, fulfill the applicable Humanities or Global Studies General Education requirement, AND need just 8 credits to complete a Spanish minor.

  • Spanish 1840 4 credits
  • Spanish 1940 4 credits
  • Spanish 2840 4 credits
  • Spanish 2940 4 credits
