The Supporting Dual Language Learners Credential will help you better understand the unique traits and needs of young children who are dual language learners.
This program is designed for early childhood educators looking to gain the skills and confidence to support children and families in a dual language environment through Child Care Education. You may earn your credential or take courses individually.
To earn your Supporting Dual Language Learners Credential, you will need to complete the following three-credit courses:

This course provides a historical overview of dual language programs in the United States and offers evidence to support the importance of home language maintenance in a dual language setting. It provides a foundation for understanding dual language learners, as well as strategies to effectively meet the needs of dual language learners in an early childhood setting, including classroom environments, teaching recommendations, and methods of assessment.

Students will learn about the components of a quality dual language program, including assessment and accountability, curriculum, instruction, classroom environments, staff quality, program structure, family and community involvement, and support and resources. Students will investigate and evaluate each component and how it affects dual language learning.

This course is offered in a bilingual format - both English and Spanish. Learn to become an effective teacher for children who are dual language learners. Learn and apply strategies to effectively support language acquisition for all dual language learners in an early childhood setting from infancy to preschool.

New or inactive students: If you are taking classes with our program for the first time, or are returning to the program after one year or more has passed since you completed your last course, apply to UW-Platteville as a special non-degree student.
Active students: To register for one of the above courses please log in to PASS, select your semester/term, select the subject “Early Childhood Education” (ECED), and select your course. For more detailed instructions, see steps 4 and 5.
After you are admitted as a special student, you will be able to register for your courses each semester. Please check the academic calendar to keep informed of important deadlines.
