His research interests include pavement materials (concrete, asphalt, and aggregate), mechanistic empirical pavement design, and infrastructure asset management. Dr. Xiao is currently investigating the impact of deicing and anti-icing materials on the durability of concrete pavements and the effectiveness of penetrating sealers in minimizing the impact, sponsored by Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He is the faculty advisor of American Concrete Institute UW-Platteville Student Chapter. He also serves as a member of the Technical Oversight Committee at Wisconsin Highway Research Program (WHRP) and a member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Standing Committee on Design and Rehabilitation of Concrete Pavements (AKP20) and Asphalt Pavements (AKP30). Dr. Xiao is a licensed Professional Engineer and actively serves at the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Wisconsin Section.
