Tyler received his Ph.D. from University of Iowa, M.A. at Tufts University, and B.A. from Grinnell College in Iowa. He specializes in Nineteenth-Century European Art History, and also done work in 20th-Modern, East Asian, Native American, and African Art History. His dissertation, "The Beast Within:  The Contested Image of the Railroad in French Visual Culture, 1837-1877" explores the changing perception of the the railroad, debates over its role in France, and depiction in Fine Art. Tyler has presented his work at numerous regional and national conferences including Nineteenth-Century Studies, Interdisciplinary Nineteenth-Century Studies, Southeastern College Art Conference, Midwest Art History Society, and at the Art Institute of Chicago.
