UW-Platteville streamlines transfers for Illinois engineering students
UW-Platteville is overhauling the transfer process for two-year engineering students in Illinois, a move that will ease the path to a bachelor's degree and open up career opportunities for graduates.
Until now, officials within UW-Platteville's College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science have had to review transfer students' applications one-by-one to determine if credits already earned might count toward a degree here.
Beginning this fall, EMS will implement a new approach for handling transfer applications from students who have earned an Associates of Engineering Science degree from an Illinois Community College institution. Under new policy, the vast majority of courses taken that would transfer within the Illinois system will automatically equate to credit at UW-Platteville.
EMS Dean Philip Parker said the change streamlines the transfer process for Illinois students, offering certainty and a clearer path toward a four-year degree. The move also should increase enrollment in EMS, he added.
"The big change is visibility and transparency of the transfer process for students, no matter which Illinois Community College they might transfer from," Parker said.
EMS has received an average of about 32 transfer applications from Illinois students annually over the last five years, accepting about half of those students on average each of those years. Overall, the college has received an average of about 170 transfer applications annually over that period, enrolling an average of about 63 students annually.
