UPDATE: Due to safety and health concerns around COVID-19, this event has been cancelled as a precautionary measure.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering is partnering with OpenPOWER to present the Big Data and AI Workshop on Tuesday, April 7 on Bo Ryan Court, Williams Fieldhouse. The workshop will run from 9a.m.-4:30p.m. Attendees will learn about the latest research and development on big data, artificial intelligence and high-performance computing.

“There is an increasing demand for data science across the globe, and as educators, we have the responsibility to supply experts in the field,” said Dr. Arghya Das, assistant professor of computer science and software engineering. “Teaching at a premier institute, I wanted to start it from here. This workshop is going to be the first stepping stone to the global vision to spread high-performance computing and data education across the globe.”

Das who is organizing the workshop said there will be about a dozen presenters including speakers from Marshfield Clinic and IBM. The workshop will showcase industry leaders, scientists from UW-Platteville, UW-Madison and The Ohio State University. There will also be a student hackathon.

“Students can do their projects at home. After two weeks they are going to submit it and we are going to judge who’s the winner,” said Das. “I’ve already started getting a lot of requests from students. They are excited to show their work.”

The workshop will wrap up with a networking session followed with an optional hands-on session with POWER-AI technologies. Das notes data science is not only computer science or electrical engineering; it crosses into many fields including biology, geography, physics, business majors, social sciences, social media, targeted recruitment and better pedagogy. He said researchers and domain-experts are trying to extract knowledge from everywhere. Anyone who is interested in big data and AI is welcome to attend the workshop.

“The participants will receive a holistic view of what’s going on outside in the domain of big data and AI, what the latest technologies are now, and how they can utilize these technologies for their workload. We are expecting to have some sessions in the workshop to get practical knowledge so that they can readily deploy it on their work. If it’s industry they can start collaborating with other networking partners. If they are academics, they can start using it for their courses,” Das said.

The vision is to foster big data, AI, high-performance computing research and education in the area. “We are expecting a successful event with lots of discussions involving cutting-edge technology,” Das said. “I would like to encourage everyone to join and learn how you can use big data and AI for your workload.”
