MidWestOne makes pledge to complete hands-on construction classroom

Construction Safety Lab

MidWestOne Bank Foundation has pledged $5,000 over two years toward the completion of a hands-on student construction classroom in the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Construction Safety Lab.

“MidWestOne is proud to partner with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Construction Management program,” said Roger Dammen, first vice president and regional credit officer/market president of MidWestOne Bank. “As an alumnus of UW-Platteville, I know first hand the quality education offered by the college and how it furthers the careers of graduates. We hope our donation to the construction lab will enhance the hands-on experience of current and future students.”

The hands-on safety training lab is a state-of-the-art, 3,200-square-foot facility, where students have access to a multitude of equipment that teaches them how to evaluate exposures, select equipment and learn the proper application and use of the equipment. The lab has multiple simulators, including a virtual reality forklift simulator, a confined space simulator, a live electrical lock out/tag out simulator and a ductless brick saw, as well as emergency response and safety-related equipment, including standard personal protective equipment.

“The construction management program is a fast-growing program which provides a quality workforce ranging from the local workforce to the national workforce,” said Dr. Chris Carlson, chair of the Industrial Studies Department. “The department’s success is directly related to the involvement and support corporations provide. The donation from MidWestOne is an example of this support, and we greatly appreciate their support and partnership to provide a quality, hands-on lab environment.”

The additional classroom space will allow students to work in a hands-on environment to go over plans, specifications and day-to-day lab operations. These real-world, hands-on experiences are essential for the success of students and their future employers.
