The University of Wisconsin-Platteville College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science  is inviting students, faculty and the public to its Engineering Seminar Series. The virtual events are free and will highlight four engineering projects and insights from experts in the field. The first seminar will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 5 p.m., featuring Dr. Bassam Zahran, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. Bassam’s presentation is titled Solarwinds Attack: Is this the New Cold War? Attendees will receive an inside look on what happened in the latest large-scale cyberattacks against U.S. government institutions and how hackers gained access to information belonging to millions of users.

This fall, UW-Platteville will be offering a new undergraduate degree in cybersecurity through the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering. The program is designed to provide students marketable skills they need in this growing field.

“We have recruited world-class cybersecurity experts to teach a curriculum that has been designed following the ABET guidelines. We’re excited about being able to provide hands-on learning opportunities to our students in our state-of-the art brand new cybersecurity lab." -Dr. Afzal Upal

“We have recruited world-class cybersecurity experts to teach a curriculum that has been designed following the ABET guidelines,” said Dr. Afzal Upal, professor and department chair. “We’re excited about being able to provide hands-on learning opportunities to our students in our state-of-the art brand new cybersecurity lab. The lab provides students the opportunity to practice their ethical hacking, malware analysis and digital forensics skills without compromising the university’s network. Our program is also aligned well with leading industry certificates which will allow our graduate to pass certificate exams.”

In addition to the bachelor’s degree in cybersecurity, students also have the option to continue with a master’s degree in cybersecurity online.

Other topics that will be discussed in the EMS Engineering Seminar Series include: Big Data and Data Mining in Geotechnical Engineering and Materials Testing on Tuesday, March 9; Pre-Engineered and Conventional Steel Buildings on Tuesday, April 6; and The Power of Rationalization in Ethical Decision Making: A Ghana Case Study on Tuesday, May 4.
