Board of Regents endorses branch campus names

Students on campus

The University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents formally approved the new names of the two UW-Platteville branch campuses Friday, cementing the relationship that will strengthen education across Southwest Wisconsin.

The new names of the branch campuses will be:

  • University of Wisconsin-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County
  • University of Wisconsin-Platteville Richland

(Acceptable on second references are UW-Platteville Baraboo Sauk County and UW-Platteville Richland.)

The UW System announced the collaborative integration on Nov. 9, 2017, and the Higher Learning Commission approved the restructuring on July 1. UW-Platteville integrated with the former two-year institutions UW-Baraboo/Sauk County and UW-Richland.

“The formal naming of the campuses is another step in the process we have been undertaking since last fall,” UW-Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields said. “We have been eager to complete this restructuring and move forward with our unified brand.”

In addition, the new logos (see below) for the branch campuses received endorsements from the Board of Regents. The timing of the logos coincided perfectly with a new branding initiative taken on by UW-Platteville that features a new logo, a stylized “P”, based upon the stained-glass window seal in Ullsvik Hall. The lines in the “P” represent a place where each student follows his or her own chosen path to a successful future.

The new UW-Platteville “P” is combined with wordmarks that emphasize the university’s new role with its branch campuses, and just as importantly, emphasizes the unique identity that both Baraboo Sauk County and Richland play in their communities. By making the location the larger entity, the history and traditions of the branch campuses remain prominent. The new logo mimics the former logo of the UW Colleges, which had the accrediting institution (at the time the University of Wisconsin) across the top, with the individual campus names in larger letters underneath. UW-Platteville is now the accrediting institution for all three campuses, and the diplomas given to the graduates will reflect the new roles.

Chancellor Shields will present his convocation addresses at all three campuses, highlighting his vision for the upcoming academic year.
