Early Adolescence (10-14)

The School of Education is no longer accepting students into this program.  This is replaced with the new Middle Childhood - Early Adolescence STEM major.

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville has long been known as a leader in middle level education. Acknowledging UW-Platteville’s leadership in middle level education, the Department of Public Instruction granted a unique licensure level to UW-Platteville that focuses on the development and education of early adolescents (ages 1014) specifically in middle level schools. The Early Adolescence licensure level requires academic preparation in two content areas.

The 24-credit interdisciplinary studies minor is an innovative way to address preparation in the two content areas for the Early Adolescence licensure level. Students select two areas of concentration from the following six areas: fine arts, foreign languages, language arts/English, mathematics, sciences and social sciences. Or, two other 24-credit minors may be selected from biology, English/language arts, a foreign language, history, math, natural science, social science, and special education/inclusion.

The PDS is a unique feature of the middle level program. Prior to student teaching, students in the program spend a semester taking coursework in a public school close to the UW-Platteville campus. During this semester, university professors and students go on-site to the middle school where the students learn the methods of teaching, assessment techniques, curriculum development and classroom management and then immediately apply what they are learning by assisting school teachers in their grades five to eight classrooms. Following many of the teaching episodes, students receive immediate feedback from their professors and peers. This provides state of-the-art educational experiences that prepare students in the program for their future student teaching and professional teaching experiences.
