The University of Wisconsin-Platteville is now accepting applications for its new Master of Science in Education in Educational Leadership, with a specialized focus on rural schools and communities. This innovative program, designed for educators seeking principal licensure, offers a flexible hybrid format that combines online coursework with in-person sessions.
“This program's flexibility brings together many experienced people in southwestern Wisconsin through our online and in-person hybrid format,” said Dr. Austin Rickels, assistant professor and program coordinator, UW-Platteville School of Education. “It allows teachers who want to earn principal licensure the freedom to continue teaching while also maintaining a face-to-face connection with their peers and instructors.”
In 16 months, individuals will acquire the skills to become a principal while balancing work and personal commitments. The program includes two professional internship practicums, providing hands-on experience in applying principal leadership in real school settings. With 16-week fall and spring semesters, along with a focused four-week summer term, the program offers an efficient path to earning principal licensure. The start date for the inaugural cohort is May 27, 2025.
Key Features:

“It is a privilege to be an educational leader in rural communities as the school is often the heartbeat and lifeblood of these amazing places in the Driftless region,” said Rickels. “This master's program will help create principals with positive leadership skills that work in small towns and ultimately allow our schools to flourish and be amongst the best in Wisconsin.”
The program focuses on developing leadership competencies such as school management, community engagement, staff development and strategic planning, while emphasizing the specific challenges and opportunities faced by rural schools.
