Strong leadership is the heartbeat of successful schools, and nowhere is that leadership more urgently needed than in rural communities. The Master of Science in Education in Educational Leadership at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville is designed for educators ready to step into principal roles and make a lasting difference, especially in small-town and rural schools where leadership can transform entire communities.
"This affordable program will help meet the regional demand for administrators as we seek to grow our own educational leaders for school districts in Southwest Wisconsin and beyond," said Austin Rickels, assistant professor of education at UW-Platteville. “It’s designed and taught by some of the best school leaders our state has to offer. Our instructors bring their Wisconsin-based expertise into every course, equipping students to lead effectively in rurally based K–12 settings.”
Launched in Spring 2025, the program prepares aspiring principals through a powerful blend of research-based coursework, real-world experience and mentorship from veteran faculty. Whether an educator is a teacher, counselor, or school support professional, it’s designed to develop the skills needed to lead with confidence, clarity and compassion.

“The program has helped me better understand the broader picture of the educational system and the strategies needed to create meaningful and lasting change,” said student Justin Engler. “I have gained a deeper understanding of effective leadership practices, data driven decision making and ways to foster a positive school culture through the real-life experiences and insights shared by former superintendents and principals who serve as our professors.”
Flexible hybrid format
Designed for working professionals, this hybrid program combines asynchronous online learning with brief, impactful on-campus sessions twice per term. Enjoy the flexibility of online coursework without losing the personal connection and support of face-to-face learning.
“I chose UW-Platteville because the program offers an in-person component that meets just often enough to provide meaningful face-to-face learning experiences with excellent professors, while still remaining affordable and flexible,” explained Engler.
With a single annual start date each May, this is an ideal time to take the next step in an educational journey. Participants join a dedicated cohort, follow a clear timeline, and graduate prepared to lead.
