Construction Career Day gives students exposure to the different career opportunities within the construction industry. Students will experience hands-on activities, and the opportunity to network with construction professionals and UW-Platteville faculty, students, and alumni. Students will also be given the opportunity to experience what a real construction site is like. The event is geared towards ninth–12th grade students, but all are welcome.

Session Description Zone Career Pathways presented by ABC of WI Construction is a huge industry, and there are a variety careers to choose from. Learn more about the great opportunities that are available in the construction industry, including the many different post high school options, such as UW-Platteville or Registered Apprenticeships. Project Management Wires and Fires Demo presented by Alliant Energy Experience a hands-on demonstration on how an electric distribution system works and what happens when hazards, such as a fallen tree, impact power lines. Utility technicians will demonstrate troubleshooting techniques, share tools and safety equipment used on the job, and introduce careers in the electric utility industry. Construction Strike An Arc presented by AZCO Stop by AZCO’s booth to experience the heat and precision of stick welding firsthand. Construction Concrete and Quality Control presented by BARD Materials Have you ever wanted to pour concrete? If so, join BARD Materials for a concrete pour. You will get the opportunity to work on concrete and learn about quality control. Construction Construction Site Tour presented by event sponsor CG Schmidt Tour an active construction project at Saint Augustine and see firsthand how a building goes from plans to reality. You'll learn about the different careers involved in construction, explore the job site, and see how project teams work together to build a facility. You'll be able to ask questions to a panel of construction professionals and hear what their job is like and how they chose their career path. In this session, you can see the importance of structural integrity playing Jenga, how hard can you can hit a nail, and then do a safety inspection on a scaffolding setup. Join Daniels Construction and see how using forms and a trowel, one of the tools skilled concrete finishers use to build the places where we live, work, and play. Construction Peg Board Game presented by Findorff Are you looking how to use a drill? Come check out this session where you learn to use a drill and create the Triangle Tee Game. Construction Careers in Construction presented by Gaylor Electric Hear highlights of the construction industry from Gaylor Electric and learn more about their company, culture, and internship program. Project Management Fire System Simulator presented by JF Ahern By utilizing our mobile demonstration trailer, you'll have the opportunity to view a sprinkler head activation by use of live fire. Additional education is provided explaining basic sprinkler system operation, components, and design, as well as the opportunity to engage with industry professionals on further questions and discussion. Construction Limited Visibility presented by JF Brennan Our commercial divers are welding, grouting, and doing construction underwater, often with limited visibility. This hands-on activity will give an idea of how our divers put pipes together underwater. Construction Structural Bolting presented by Kraemer North America Join Kraemer North America for a workshop on structural bolting which will demonstrate tension vs. torque, and show a life-size mockup of a steel truss joint. You'll also have the opportunity to watch a demonstration on how bridge piers are built in water using cofferdams. Construction Bridge Building presented by Lunda Construction Co. Have you ever thought about constructing a bridge? In this hands-on session, you will see blueprints to construct a PVC bridge, work in teams to execute the plan, and have the opportunity to walk across your creation. Construction Estimating Hot Seat presented by Market & Johnson In this interactive game, you and your team will run the project estimating gauntlet and test your plan reading, pricing abilities, and cost projection skills. You’ll review plans for an actual construction project and identify and rank which cost projection categories are most expensive by reviewing the project plans. Project Management Exploring Electric Utility Construction presented by Michels This hands-on demo includes opportunities to see how electric utilities are operated. You'll be able to try on the PPE gear, operate tools, and ask our technicians questions about the work they perform every day. Be sure to ask about key job responsibilities and apprenticeships. Construction Masonry Activity presented by Miron Construction Get hands-on experience in masonry in this session. Learn how to lay brick and block by hand and with state-of-the-art technology called MULEs with Miron Construction. Construction Electrical Hands-on Experience presented by Pieper Power Ever wonder what an electrician does? Come join Piper Power for pipe bending, how to wire a switch, and a hands-on automation demonstration. Construction Fire Engine presented by Platteville Fire Department Ever wonder what it would be like to be a fire fighter? If so this is the session for you.
