Engagement Grants

Community Engaged Learning, often known simply as "service learning" combines learning goals with community service in ways that benefit both the community and the student.  Community partners may get something tangible built, such as a prototype of a new device, or may benefit from an experience, such as having students working with them in or out of a classroom.  Students can benefit from the experience of working with and for a community organization.  Central to these real world education experiences for the students is the cycle of doing and reflecting on what they have done.  There is a long history of funded community engagement projects at UW-Platteville and the SREF Engagement Grants continue to support these projects that benefit communities and organizations in Southwest Wisconsin and beyond.

Community engagement and service learning are recognized as valuable high impact practices that engage students with community partners for the benefit of both.  For over a decade the Pioneer Academic Center for Community Engagement (PACCE) has supported these activities successfully.  While PACCE no longer exists, the funding for the activities PACCE supported is still available and continues to come from student differential tuition paid by all students.  This is now the Student Research and Engagement Fund (SREF).  The transition from PACCE to SREF is almost complete.  There are changes, including an increased focus on undergraduate research and some alterations to the application process, but the basics remain the same; faculty or staff apply for funding to support projects that engage their students and a community partner (or partners) to do projects that are mutually beneficial.
