Social Justice: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund

The Dennis J. and Aundra N. Shields Social Justice: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Fund was established to enhance the efforts at UW-Platteville to support diversity, equity and inclusion.

Inspired by their own journeys, the couple provided the namesake and and an initial gift of $12,000 that will grow to $30,000 in the next five years. Throughout their nearly 40-plus years in higher education administration and leadership, it became clear to them that their mission is to champion individual empowerment and access for those who have been historically excluded from educational opportunity. This fund aims to address inequitable structures that impede the ability to further the cause of diversity, equity, inclusion, and the pursuit of social justice.

The Impact

The fund has the potential to make a wide, long-lasting impact across the university with ripples that will be felt in surrounding communities. The key areas of impact will be:

  • Diversify faculty
  • Improve relationships with historically excluded racially diverse communities
  • Advance cultural competencies of the campus community
