Awards

Recipient of the University of Wisconsin System Outstanding Academic Staff Award, the UW-Platteville Woman of the Year Award, the UW-Platteville Outstanding Recent Alumnus Award, the College of EMS Outstanding Alumnus Award, the Rosa Parks Diversity Award from the Women’s Transportation Network, and the INSIGHT Into Diversity “2016 Inspiring Women in STEM” Award. The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) awarded the UW-Platteville Women in Engineering, Math, and Science Program the Claire L. Felbinger Award for diversity. Although these state and national awards are impressive, her most prized awards come directly from students. In particular, the award from the UW-Platteville Students Planning for Success, housed in the Disability Access Department, as a supportive staff member and the certificate of recognition from the UW-Platteville Chapter of Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman honor society, in recognition for outstanding achievements to the students of UW-Platteville.

About

Tammy J. Salmon-Stephens is the Director of the College of EMS Student Success Programs and has worked at UW-Platteville since 1997. Salmon-Stephens, a UW-Platteville alumna, holds BS and MS degrees in engineering and is actively involved in programs supporting women and underrepresented minorities in STEM and student success.  Salmon-Stephens focuses her project management and communication skills on programs and events that improve and support student success in higher education, specifically through coaching, mentoring, teaching, identity discovery and development, diversity, equity, inclusion, and self-care. Most notable is her work in increasing access for women in STEM careers, improving processes that remove barriers to success, and improving communication. Her interests outside of work include being a mom and a life partner, reading, fishing, time with family and friends, and occasionally quilting and sewing. One of her current goals is to build an online social media presence and become a certified professional coach. She is the co-advisor for the National Society of Leadership and Success student chapter and is a Strategic Doing Workshop Leader. She and some of her family are entrepreneurs and own Bitesize Tackle, LLC - manufacturing and selling the nearly 100-year-old Miller Wobbler. One of her current goals is to build an online social media presence and become a certified professional coach.

Salmon-Stephens has partnered with several faculty, staff, students, and external partners to bring approximately $7 to $8 million of funding from federal, state, and local grants.  Individual donors and corporate sponsors have also contributed to this financial support for UW-Platteville students, faculty, staff, and aspiring elementary, middle, and high school STEM professionals. In her last few years of tenure at UW-Platteville, she aspires to partner with her extensive network to create a UW-Platteville Foundation endowment to ensure that funds are available to support student success initiatives and to celebrate the collaborative efforts focused on student success. She invites you to be a partner in this effort!
