Portuguese is the sixth most-spoken language in the world! It is the official language of Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, The Republic of Guinea-Bissau, São Tome and East Timor. It also shares official language status with Mandarin Chinese in Macau. Brazil is the seventh economy in the world, which makes Portuguese extremely relevant in a global economy.

The Portuguese courses at UW-Platteville introduce the students to the Lusophone (Portuguese speaking) world. Emphasis is given to the development of the four skills (speaking, listening, reading, and writing), as well as the appreciation and awareness of Portuguese-speaking cultures. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the Portuguese Language Club and other events promoted by the Portuguese Program.

Portuguese can be combined with other areas preparing students for future careers, including:
• International  Business
• Spanish
• Latin American Studies

The University of Wisconsin-Platteville offers the following COURSES:

PORTUG 1840 - Elementary Portuguese I (Fall) (4 credits)

PORTUG 1940 - Elementary Portuguese II (Spring) (4 credits)

(Additional courses will be offered in the near future.)

These courses count toward Foreign Languages competence (General Educational requirement). They also count toward Latin American Studies Minor.
