UTBM Academics

UTBM

The UW-Platteville Exchange program at the Université de Technologie Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM) is designed to provide students with a personalized and integrated living and learning experience in France. Students may participate for one semester (spring only) or for a full academic year, enrolling in between 12 and 18 credits per semester.

All courses are taken alongside local and international students. Some of UTBM's courses are taught in English and some are taught in French. The courses available each term can be found on UTBM's website: https://guideuv.utbm.fr/GuideUv/Consultation/Recherche.aspx.

UTBM recommends that international students take five (5) or six (6) classes per semester. Here are two recommended student schedule options.

Option 1: Recommended
6 classes (UVs) = 26 ECTS credits

  • Two (2) technical classes (6 ECTS credits each)
  • One (1) French language class from Humanities Department (4 ECTS credits)
  • Two (2) additional classes from Humanities Department (4 ECTS credits each)
  • Required Course: PA02 Cross-Cultural Studies (2 ECTS credits)

Option 2: This is considered a heavy course load for an international student.
6 classes (UVs) = 28 ECTS credits

  • Three technical classes (6 ECTS credits each)
  • One (1) French language class from Humanities Department (4 ECTS credits)
  • One (1) additional class from Humanities Department (4 ECTS credits)
  • Required Course: PA02 Cross-Cultural Studies (2 ECTS credits)

Required Courses

International students at UTBM are required to take the Cross-Cultural Studies class and a French class. The Cross-Cultural Studies class is designed to help students decode French culture and adapt to life in France. French language classes are taught immersion style and are available at several levels from beginning to advanced.

Credit Transfer

Credits will be validated on an official UTBM transcript at the end of the semester.

The credit hours awarded at UTBM are measured using the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), and students can read more about the American Credit conversion on the Academic Planning and Credit Transfer page.  The grades students receive abroad will be converted to the U.S. grading system of A, B, C, etc. based on the official transcript that is received from UTBM.  UW-Platteville Education Abroad uses the following conversion guide as a guideline, provided by World Education Services, in converting students’ grades: http://www.wes.org/gradeconversionguide/index.asp.

Please note that this only serves as a general conversion guideline.

While all credits should be transferable, students should work with their academic advisor at their home institution to choose appropriate and beneficial courses from the UTBM curriculum prior to their semester abroad.  Courses that may fulfill specific requirements for major, minor, general education, or elective requirements towards an American degree must be approved by the appropriate person(s) at the home institution.  Please see the Academic Planning and Credit Transfer page for more information.
