A Smart Investment in Your Future
At the March 2023 meeting, the UW System Board of Regents approved the 2023-24 academic year tuition and fee rates. This includes raising the tuition for Wisconsin residents for the first time in a decade. Between the tuition freeze, decreases in state funding, and a 30% increase in inflation (2013 to 2023), this tuition increase is necessary for us to continue delivering the rigorous, hands-on learning experiences that will prepare students to meet the challenges of today.
UW-Platteville remains committed to providing a high-quality, hands-on education at an affordable price. Even with changes to tuition and fees, Platteville will remain one of the most affordable options within System. When comparing the total cost of tuition, fees, room, and board, UW-Platteville ranks 8th among the 13 UW comprehensives.
What’s Changed for the 2023-24 Academic Year
- UW System increased resident undergraduate tuition by 4.5% across all UW campuses after a 10-year tuition freeze.
- UW Platteville increased the Tuition Advantage Program (IL and IA) and non-resident tuition rates by 3.4%.
- UW-Platteville increased the Pioneer Potential from $120 to $245 per year. The Pioneer Potential funds mental health services, academic support services, hands-on academic experiences, and student financial aid, among other things. This has existed for several years but was not listed separately on students’ 2022-23 bill.
- Due to the significantly higher cost of delivering some programs, the university has added program-specific differential tuition to four programs: Computer Science, Construction Management, Cybersecurity, and Engineering. Students majoring in these programs will have this additional tuition added to their base tuition rate. Even when you add the program-specific differentials, UW-Platteville remains highly affordable. For example, UW-Platteville ranks 6th in tuition among the 9 UW comprehensives that offer an engineering program.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Financial aid
How do I access my updated financial aid package?
- When your financial aid package is updated, you will receive a notification email at your uwplatt.edu account. The email will include helpful information to ensure that you understand your financial aid package.
- Log into your PASS account to review your updated package. Grants and scholarships are accepted on your behalf. You must actively accept loans to receive them. Please note: If you accept loans your ‘To-Do List’ will update with additional paperwork requirements. Monitor your email and your PASS ‘To-Do List’ regularly.
- Have questions or don’t think you received an email? Contact Financial Aid at finaid@uwplatt.edu or 608.342.1836.

Program-specific differential tuition
Will new and/or continuing students be responsible for paying a program-specific differential?
- New and continuing students will be responsible for a paying a program differential if they are majoring in one of the designated programs as of the 10th day of classes.
Why am I paying a program-specific differential when students in a different major are not?
- The costs to deliver computer science, construction management, cybersecurity, dairy science, and engineering are significantly higher than those for other programs. This is often due to lab, software, and other material costs that are necessary for teaching the program.
- UW-Platteville remains one of the most affordable options in System even when program-specific differential tuitions are added. For example, UW-Platteville’s engineering tuition will rank 6th among the 9 institutions that offer engineering.
I’m not enrolled in any required courses in my major this semester, will I pay the program-specific differential? Why?
- Yes. These programs have differential tuition as they cost substantially more to deliver.
- By including the additional tuition each term, the added costs are distributed over the length of the student’s program rather than having specific course fees at a higher cost in later semesters.
If I am double majoring in two programs with program-specific differentials, do I pay both differentials?
- No. The student’s bill will show a cost that is equal to their highest program-specific differential that term.
- Double major examples:
Civil Engineering ($1,400/year) = Environmental Engineering ($1,400/year) The student’s highest differential is $1,400/year so that is what will appear on their bill. Software Engineering ($1,400/year) > Cybersecurity ($700/year) The student’s highest differential is $1400 so that is what will appear on their bill. Cybersecurity ($700/year) = Computer Science ($700/year) The student’s highest differential is $700/year so that is what will appear on their bill. -
Engineering-specific questions
Is the engineering differential tuition needed to pay off the new engineering building, Sesquicentennial Hall?
- Differential tuition will not be used to pay for the building. The design and construction of Sesquicentennial Hall was fully funded by the State of Wisconsin.
Will engineering undecided and general engineering students pay the program-specific differential?
- Yes
Do Platteville Engineering Partnership (PEP) students pay the Pioneer Potential?
- Yes.
Do PEP students pay the engineering program-specific differential tuition?
- Yes.
-
Changing major mid-semester
If I enter a major with a program-specific differential mid-semester, how is that reflected on my bill? If I leave a major with a program-specific differential mid-semester, how is that reflected on my bill?
- The student’s program(s) as of the tenth day of classes will determine which program-specific differentials they are assessed.
- Tenth day of classes is also the last day on which a student can receive a 100% refund.
-
Part-time students
Will the Pioneer Potential be prorated?1
- Yes at $10.21 per credit.
Will the program-specific differential tuitions be prorated?
- Yes.
- Computer Science, Cybersecurity, and Construction Management will be at $29.17 per credit.
- Dairy Science will be at $20.83 per credit.
- Engineering will be at $58.33 per credit.
1 In this context, prorate means to divide the cost equally across the number of credits in which a student is enrolled. A half-time student taking 6 credits would pay $10.21 per credit in which they are enrolled equaling $61.26 total.
-
Veteran's benefits
Will my veteran’s benefits cover the cost of the Pioneer Potential and program-specific differential tuition?
- Veteran programs that cover the cost of tuition will also cover the costs of the Pioneer Potential and the program-specific differentials as they are classified as tuition. For more information about your specific circumstance, contact the Wright Center at wrightcenter@uwplatt.edu.
-
Non-degree seeking students
If I am a non-degree seeking student or a high school dual enrollee, will I pay a program-specific differential if I enroll in a course from that discipline?
- No. A student may be charged course fees, but that is something you would see in PASS when registering for the course.
