Dr. Patrick Solar named BSCJ program coordinator
Starting in September, Dr. Patrick Solar will take over as Program Coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program. Solar has been teaching criminal justice courses on campus and online at UW-Platteville since 2013.
Solar is an alumnus of Northern Illinois University, where he earned a master’s degree in public administration and a doctorate in political philosophy. Before coming to UW-Platteville, Solar worked in policing for nearly 30 years, serving as an officer, detective, sergeant, lieutenant, and chief until his retirement in 2010. In addition to his work in law enforcement, Solar has been teaching on a part-time basis since 1995. He is currently developing a textbook on police-community relations.
In his new role, Solar will ensure consistency and quality of instruction in courses, among other duties. “I plan on accessing each course periodically to assure that our instructors continue to do a fantastic job making our online students feel welcome, supported, and challenged,” he said. “I would certainly want to take a look at the possibility of new course offerings to ensure that our program is meeting the needs and expectations of our customers.”
Solar will also be working closely with Dr. Cheryl Banachowski-Fuller, Director of the Master of Science in Criminal Justice program and current Coordinator of the Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice program. “Dr. Pat Solar will be an excellent coordinator for the online BSCJ program for the Criminal Justice Department. His skill set and expertise are strong in the areas of management, teaching, and course development. Most importantly, he is an outstanding academic instructor and career advisor for both on-campus and online delivery. In addition to his good sense of humor and pleasant personality, Dr. Solar continuously receives excellent evaluations from both his students and peers,” she said.
“I am certainly looking forward to this new role and the ability to work more closely with those who are on the cutting edge of this instructional technology.”
Solar’s experience in online education will no doubt be an asset in his new position. “I am certainly looking forward to this new role and the ability to work more closely with those who are on the cutting edge of this instructional technology,” Solar said. “I firmly believe in the value of online education, so much so that I use the online platform extensively to host my face-to-face classes. It's my belief that the online environment offers all instructors the opportunity to facilitate the more routine instructional functions so that they can use the free time that the online platform offers to better engage and serve our students.”
