- Bachelor of Science in Water Resources (emphasis in Groundwater), University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Randy Mentz joined the University of Wisconsin-Platteville staff in 2003 as a field technician for the university’s Pioneer Farm in the Agro-Ecosystem Research program. Mentz’s main duty was operating and maintaining edge-of-field runoff monitoring stations that were designed to measure and sample storm (and snowmelt) runoff water from farm fields. With experience, he took on additional responsibilities, such as data management, quality assurance, methods development, data analysis, presenting at conferences, grant writing support, grant administration, training and supervision, outreach, and project management. During his 14 years with the program, collaborations with other universities, state and federal agencies, non-governmental organizations, and private farmers helped to create a track record of nearly 100 percent competitive grant success with about $2 million in active grants during peak periods.
Mentz joined the Alternative Delivery Systems team in June 2017 as the Research and Compliance Manager overseeing research projects associated with assessment, student services, marketing, and faculty development. He also oversees adherence to copyright and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements for programs administered by the Distance Learning Center. In addition, he assists with research on other regulations that could influence distance education.
Mentz lives in Dubuque, Iowa, with his wife, Michelle, an orchestra teacher at Washington Middle School, and their two children, Walter and Henry. He and his wife jointly own and operate Mentz Photography, a wedding and engagement photography business. In his free time, Mentz enjoys family events, reading about technology and politics, and watching movies. His current favorite TV shows are Silicon Valley and Game of Thrones.
