Coding Club

Why participate in the coding club?

Computers are everywhere, changing every industry on the planet, but fewer than half of all schools teach computer science. Tech jobs are among the fastest growing in the country, yet girls are being left behind. Computing is where the jobs are and where they will be in the future. And coding is fun!

What is the purpose?

Coding isn't just for college students anymore. With the importance of STEM careers on the rise, The University of Wisconsin – Platteville’s Computer Science and Software Engineering department, the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science Student Success Program, and Platteville Schools are making sure students are prepared and ready to code.

The Westview Elementary School coding club vision stems from code.org, “Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science.” Westview Elementary School were inspired by the 2013 video “What Most Schools Don’t Teach”.

What will you learn?

At the beginning of school year, coding club students will work on the 20-hour curriculum provided by code.org. This helps students learn the basic terminology and process to start thinking like a computer scientist. Then, students move to the introductory computing curriculum, using Scratch. Scratch curriculum has fun and engaging activities to help students learn to become creators and designers of their own work.

How much is it?

ABSOLUTELY FREE! Plus, the club provides computers and internet access for all club members.  You can join the club at anytime.

Who: 3rd and 4th Graders
When: Every other Wednesday, January 31; February 14, 28; March 7, 21; April 4, 18, 25
Time: 3:20pm - 4:00pm
Where: Westview Elementary School, 1201 Camp Street

In order to participate, the parent or guardian must sign a consent form, then scan with your phone or scanner, and email your scanned picture file to gavind@uwplatt.edu.  If you do not have access to a scanner, you can mail it to:

We prefer for you bring the signed and completed consent form to the event only if you think it will not arrive on time in the U.S. mail.  It's important that we have it the day of the program.  Extra consent forms will be available the day of the event as long as the parent or legal guardian is present to sign it.
