PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville’s Department of Performing and Visual Arts will host its 22nd annual Holiday Gala on Friday, Dec. 8 and Saturday, Dec. 9 in the Brodbeck Concert Hall, Center for the Arts, at 7:30 p.m. Over the years, the gala, a festive concert that welcomes the holiday season, has become a university, community and tri-state area tradition.

This year, the concert will feature traditional and contemporary holiday music performed by the university’s Symphony Orchestra, choirs, Jazz Ensemble I and chamber ensembles, with special guests – the Platteville Chorale and the Platteville Children’s Choir. A new addition to this year’s chamber ensembles is the Pioneer Saxophone Choir, a group of 45 soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass saxophones. UW-Platteville student performers are from a variety of disciplines, ranging from music, education and engineering to biology, agriculture and business.

Driftless Circle Brass, a student brass quintet, and Diminished 7, a student vocal ensemble, will present holiday music in the lobby before the concert and at intermission.

“The Holiday Gala showcases the talents of many of the performing groups on campus and in the Southwest Wisconsin area,” said Dr. Barry Ellis, director of bands and orchestras and professor of music at UW-Platteville. “The Platteville Children’s Choir and the Platteville Chorale have been a notable part of the gala since its formation. These ensembles confirm that music is for all generations and can be performed by all generations.”

The concert also functions as a means of raising money for the Department of Performing and Visual Art’s Music Scholarship Fund, used to assist current and future UW-Platteville students who are active in the music program.

“In order to continue to best serve our students, we need additional help in the music scholarship area,” said Ellis. “With the rising cost of college, the Department of Performing and Visual Arts needs assistance in the scholarship area to continue to attract musically gifted students who require financial assistance. Money raised at the gala will provide educational opportunities for even more students who are pursuing a major or minor in music.”

UW-Platteville faculty members participating in the concert include Ellis; Dr. Bob Demaree, director of choral activities; Stephanie Klockow, associate director of choral activities; Dr. Susan Day, associate professor of voice and vocal area coordinator; Dr. David Cooper, associate professor of trumpet and director of Jazz I; Allen Cordingley, lecturer of saxophone; Rob Shepherd, lecturer of music; and Dr. David Earll, assistant professor of tuba, euphonium and trombone.

Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and are available at the door or online through the University Box Office, located in the lower level of Ullsvik Hall. Call 608-342-1298 or 877-727-1CFA or go online.
