UW-Platteville concludes 199th commencement ceremony
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – On Saturday, Dec. 16, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville held its 199th commencement ceremony, with more than 750 candidates crossing the stage. The day began at 9 a.m. with a ceremony for candidates from the College of Business, Industry, Life Science and Agriculture. At 12:30, candidates from the College of Liberal Arts and Education and Graduate Studies were honored. The ceremony for the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Science was held at 4 p.m. All ceremonies were held in the Williams Fieldhouse.
“Your career will not only be defined by how well you dot your I’s and cross your T’s, it will be about how well you work with others,” Chancellor Dennis J. Shields said to the class of December 2017. “I am confident you learned those skills during your time here.”
The College of BILSA’s ceremony included 262 undergraduate candidates. Rachel Hopkins Bonnell, a business administration major from Byron, Illinois, was selected to give the senior speaker address. Dr. Stacey Schultz-Cherry, virologist and member of the Department of Infectious Disease at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, served as the principal speaker for this ceremony. Dr. Beth Frieders, a professor in UW-Platteville’s biology department, served as the ceremony’s marshal.
The College of LAE and Graduate Studies ceremony featured 163 undergraduate candidates and 137 master’s candidates. Lukas Wymer, a social sciences comprehensive major from Brodhead, Wisconsin, was selected as the ceremony’s senior speaker. UW-Platteville 2002 alumna Cynthia Delgado Galván, an instructor at Milwaukee Area Technical College, served as the principal speaker for the ceremony. Dr. Marc Wruble, professor of psychology, was chosen to serve as the ceremony’s marshal.
Saturday’s final ceremony featured 201 candidates from the College of EMS. Karen Kakou, a Côte d’lvoire (Ivory Coast), West Africa native, was selected as the ceremony’s senior speaker. Ralph Howard, president and CEO of Design Specialties LLC in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, served as principal speaker. Dr. Mark Meyers, professor emeritus of civil engineering and UW-Platteville alumnus, was the ceremony’s marshal.
“As you leave here, degree in hand, be a leader,” Chancellor Shields said. “Your success in life will not be measured in dollars, but in respect and positive influence.”
