Whether you are an artist, musician or athlete, the term “movement” has many meanings, and the same can be said of the artwork in this year’s UW-Platteville Art Faculty Exhibition. On Tuesday, Jan. 30, Nohr Gallery will host an opening reception for “Movement: A UW-Platteville Art Faculty Exhibition.”

This collection of artworks was created by the faculty and staff of the art program from the Department of Performing and Visual Arts. Participants in this year’s exhibition include Department of Performing and Visual Arts Co-Chair Greg Nelson, Art Professor Letha Kelsey and Art Lecturers Scott Steder, Jacob Bautista and Jennifer Wintress. Professor of Art History Dr. Tyler Ostergaard will give a brief gallery talk regarding the exhibition’s theme during the reception at 3:30 p.m.

Like last year, the art program guided its creative process by voting on a theme for the Faculty Show. This year, they explored the complexity of “movement.”

“When we typically think about movement, we think about something physically changing location within a space, but visual artists have all sorts of tools to pull from to depict movement,” said Cameren Hill, Nohr Gallery manager. “Whether they use movement as a core principle of design by their use of space, color, line or shape in a composition, utilize technology to input physical movement into a piece, or even take inspiration from their athletic pursuits, inanimate works seem to come to life. We see this breadth of variety in this year’s exhibit.”

Like in the watercolor, oil and wax piece “Saddle 06,” Kelsey’s work not only utilizes movement visually by her use of repeating lines and color patterning, but also takes inspiration from physical movement of the everyday.

“The paintings I will include in this year's Faculty Show connect to the theme of movement through my daily practice of walking,” said Kelsey. “Each contain sensory information gleaned from the contemporary Midwestern landscape. They resonate from my ecstatic contemplation of the natural world.”
