Outreach program provides opportunities to explore STEM
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will offer its inaugural STEM Discovery Program July 23–29 on the UW-Platteville campus.
Made possible with a grant from the University of Wisconsin System, this outreach program for students in grades 9-11 is designed to assist diverse and low-income families in gaining access to STEM exploration and introducing them to STEM workforce development.
The Office of Multicultural Student Affairs, in collaboration with UW-Platteville’s three colleges, coordinates this one-week residential program. Participants will have a number of hands-on opportunities to explore and discover the science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. Taught by UW-Platteville professors, the activities will range from 3D printing, engine design and metal casting, to fingerprinting and forensics and many more.
“At UW-Platteville, we pride ourselves on providing an accessible education,” said UW-Platteville Chancellor Dennis J. Shields. “We are known for our many programs and camps that help build an educational pipeline, introducing students to the college experience while they are still in high school and middle school. We are excited that this newest program is going to continue that tradition, while opening up the opportunity to even more students who might not have had the chance otherwise. STEM Discovery is a significant first step in offering an accessible education to students while also developing a diverse STEM workforce. Through this program, we hope to build a college-ready community culture within our participants and engage them in year-round activities that continue to promote higher education.”
The program will end with a celebration on Friday, July 28 at 5:30 p.m. in Velzy Commons, Ullsvik Hall at UW-Platteville. During this event, participants will present their highlights from the week.
