New Student Registration assists incoming students
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Platteville will offer New Student Registration to the members of the Class of 2022 over a three-week period, beginning Monday, June 11. These students and their parents/guests will select a daylong session to learn more about the transition to college life.
At NSR, students will register for classes and network with faculty, staff and peer advisors. These connections that students make are valuable in preparing for a new lifestyle.
“NSR is a student’s first official day as a Pioneer,” Director of Retention and Academic Support Dr. Karen McLeer said. “We want them to feel welcome, receive answers to their questions about college life both in and out of the classroom, and meet some of the people who will play an important role in their lives while they are students here.”
New students will get to learn about what life at UW-Platteville is like from current students who were selected to be peer advisors. “Incoming students often have a lot of questions,” McLeer said. “What classes will I take? What will it be like to live in the residence halls? Where am I going to eat? How will I meet people? What will I do when I’m not in class? The time spent with peer advisors in small group settings allows them to ask those questions of fellow students and also make new friends.”
They will also work with faculty advisors to create a fall semester class schedule that is manageable and gives the incoming student the opportunity for success. New students will have the opportunity to initiate their official campus email, obtain a student ID card and learn about student organizations.
Parents and guests will attend informational sessions about financial aid, dining services and student housing. They will also select additional sessions that discuss campus technology, the Dean of Students Office, career and professional development, campus police and parking.
“We welcome family members during NSR because they play an important role in their student’s success,” McLeer said. “We work to answer their often more practical questions around options for paying tuition and fees, navigating the meal plans and deciding if a student will have a car on campus. Parents are often very interested in the offices that provide direct resources for students—academic support and emotional, physical or social resources as well.”
NSR runs June 11-15, June 18-22 and July 9-13. The full schedule of events can be viewed here.
Students must remember to bring a photo ID card to receive an official UW-Platteville username. Students, family and guests are reminded to park in lots 4, 6, 9, or 26. No parking pass will be necessary during NSR. Also, they are encouraged to dress casually including comfortable shoes.
“At the end of each day, we hope students and their families leave feeling ‘at home’ at UW-Platteville,” McLeer said.
