Kirk receives Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence
PLATTEVILLE, Wis.— Dr. Rea Kirk, professor in the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, has been selected as the recipient of the 2015 Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence. The purpose of the award is to recognize a tenure track faculty member who has made distinguished contributions to UW-Platteville as an outstanding teacher.
“I am thrilled and honored to have received this recognition,” said Kirk. “I learn so much from my students.”
Kirk joined the UW-Platteville School of Education in 1996, first as a member of academic staff and later as an assistant professor and associate professor. She currently works as a professor and has held that position since 2007. In addition to the School of Education, she has also taught in the women and gender studies and ethnic studies departments at UW-Platteville.
She has written over 50 publications, the most recent of which is entitled “Differentiae instruction to reach all learners” that was published in January, and has given over 100 professional presentations on a variety of education topics and issues. She has served for five terms in the UW-Platteville Faculty Senate, and serves on the women and gender studies program and ethnic studies program councils.
Kirk also conducted research into inclusion strategies for K-12 teachers.
Students in Kirk’s Introduction to Inclusion class identified a good teacher as one who has patience and humility as well as the universal values to reach his or her students. They also said that a good teacher is one who teaches about life and not just the subject matter and has good relationships with his or her students.
Kirk has also been selected as the UW-Platteville nominee for the Regents Teaching Excellence Award, an award made to faculty and academic staff members within the UW System in recognition of outstanding career achievement in teaching.
“The best thing about my job is my students and my colleagues,” said Kirk. “I look to them for the courage and inspiration in my life.”
Kirk will be recognized at fall convocation, which will be held Thursday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. in Velzy Commons at Ullsvik Hall.
