Kara Candito to hold poetry workshop at Shake Rag Alley on Dec. 2

Dr. Kara Candito

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Dr. Kara Candito, assistant professor of creative writing and English literature at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, will hold a poetry workshop, “Revision and Reimagination,” at Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts in Mineral Point, Wis., on Monday, Dec. 2 from 6-8:30 p.m.

The workshop is open to beginning and intermediate poets. About one week before the workshop, participants will be asked to submit a four-page poetry manuscript as well as a poem by a writer who has inspired their work.

Workshop participants will work on the art of revision, from elements of voice and style to more technical considerations, such as line breaks and punctuation. In addition, they will explore strategies for expanding and/or radically revising images and figurative language.

“Our discussions and revision exercises will emphasize strangeness and innovation,” said Candito. “Each writer will create a 'negative image' of one of his  or her poems and write a collaborative revision with another member of the workshop. We'll conclude the session with a short reading from each member's work.”

Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts provides traditional, visual, performing and literary arts education programs for children and adults.

“This workshop is an excellent example of a creative, collaborative activity that helps foster ties between the university and the surrounding community and engage with the arts community in the region,” said Candito. “I am conducting this workshop as a community service, so all course fees will go toward supporting Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts.”

The poetry workshop is part of a five-day residency at Shake Rag Alley that was awarded to Candito by the Council for Wisconsin Writers and Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts. In addition to conducting the workshop, Candito plans to work on her own poetry during the residency.

Candito is the recipient of the Lorine Niedecker Poetry Prize, the 2013 Agha Shahid Ali Poetry Prize, and the Prairie Schooner Book Prize in Poetry.

The workshop has room for eight participants. The registration fee is $15. To register, go to http://bit.ly/1de8A3r.
