PLATTEVILLE-AVISTA, Inc., employees gathered Tuesday, Dec. 10, to congratulate coworker Mitch Iverson of Platteville who recently was awarded a certificate of completion in project management through the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Tony Munos, director of UWP Project Management Programs, presented Iverson with the certificate.

"Mitch is the first project management professional UWP has awarded with a certificate of course completion," Munos said. "Mitch received his project management professionals (PMP) certification this past July from the Project Management Institute (PMI). Because UWP is a regional education provider through PMI, we awarded Mitch with a course completion certificate."

Iverson, a programs manager for the Platteville software development and testing company AVISTA, Inc., pursued the certificate through UWP's online project management course for several reasons.

"I sought a certificate in project management for three main reasons," Iverson said. "I wanted to help differentiate myself from other project managers. I wanted to improve Avista's project management capabilities and, by having a certificate in project management, it helps ensure our client that our projects are under control and well-managed."

Iverson and other professionals already working in their fields find the flexibility of UWP's on-line courses a nice fit for their busy schedules.

"With my schedules at work, at home and when I travel, it would be impossible for me to take a course that would require me to be on campus 2-3 days per week," Iverson said. "With the online course, I can be anywhere in the country and still be able to do my school work and submit it to the professor."

While Iverson did pursue the project management certificate on his own initiative, AVISTA has been very supportive, and Iverson has recommended the UWP online course to several coworkers.

"Now that AVISTA knows what project management is all about, my employers have been very supportive," Iverson said. "I really learned a lot from UWP's online course and it certainly helped prepare me for the project management professionals exam."

Iverson is originally from Livingston and graduated from Iowa-Grant High School in 1982. Following high school, he attended UWP and received a bachelor of science degree in computer science, with a minor in mathematics. He has been employed with AVISTA for the past 15 years. Iverson and his wife, Kay, have two children, Alex and Alyssa.
