Hu recognized for advising for international students
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Dr. Yuanyuan Hu, professor of English and program coordinator for the Master of Science in English Education China program at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, has received the 2015 Excellence in Advising for International Students Award.
Hu joined the UW-Platteville family in 2007 after receiving her Ph.D. as an international student at Purdue University. On campus, she teaches six undergraduate Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages programs, providing students with the professional knowledge and skills necessary to teach English to speakers of other languages in the United States or abroad. “I have been infusing international and intercultural components and perspectives into every course I teach,” said Hu. “My American students have a variety of opportunities to interact and/or support international students, serving as conversation partners or tutors and I have personally enjoyed witnessing their growth as a result of the interactions.”
Hu has also been teaching TESOL programs in Wuhan, China every summer since 2008. “So far, I have taught 183 Chinese graduate students and served as seminar paper advisor for 13 of them,” said Hu. “Since becoming coordinator for the MSEE China program, I have served as the academic advisor for 139 students.”
Hu has been an active member of the English Language Program Advisory Group since 2012 and also served on the University International Education Committee from 2008-11 and 2013 to present.
“I believe in the power of empathy and active listening in advising international students,” said Hu.
Hu will be recognized at fall convocation, which will be held Thursday, Aug. 27 at 1 p.m. in Velzy Commons, Ullsvik Hall.
