“We’ve been trying to find some funds for a new piano for years, and now I believe we’re closer to being in a position to purchase one,” said Alcalay, UW-Platteville associate professor of piano. “This is very exciting, as it would be a major long-term investment that would greatly enhance our music program and the university at large.”

Alcalay added that the university’s current Steinway is more than 30 years old, and is showing its age, and wear and tear.

“A new Steinway would bring significant benefits to our students, faculty, guest artists and the community,” Alcalay said. “Having a good piano would also be excellent advertising for the school, not only to live audiences but also to a wider public via recordings.”

The concert program includes a variety of piano/clarinet duets, including the Brahms E-flat major Sonata, Op. 120 No. 2. Alcalay and Marco will also play solo selections, including Liszt Legend No. 2, “St. Francis of Paola Walking on the Waves,” and 3 Pieces for Solo Clarinet by Stravinsky.

“It’s always a great pleasure to perform with Eugene,” said Marco, UW-Platteville faculty clarinetist and senior music instructor. “Musically we’re on the same wavelength. He is an extraordinary artist. UW-Platteville is fortunate to have him.”

Chinese soprano Xianghua “Shell” Han, an instructor with UW-Platteville’s Confucius Institute who is in the second year of a two-year assignment, will also join Alcalay in a performance of Zheng Qiufeng’s “I Love You, China.”

“It’s such a delight and pleasure to collaborate again with John and Shell – John has always been a dear colleague, friend, and wonderful musician, not to mention a fellow New Yorker!” said Alcalay. “And I am so glad that Shell is able to join us; she is a tremendously talented soprano, endowed with an absolutely beautiful and powerful voice.”
