Dreessens honored with Academic Staff Award for Excellence
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Vickie Dreessens, administrative director for University of Wisconsin-Platteville Student Health Services, was selected to receive the UW-Platteville Academic Staff Award for Excellence. The annual award recognizes an instructional or non-instructional academic staff member who has provided essential services to the university while demonstrating excellence of performance, personal interaction, initiative and creativity, and outstanding achievement.
Dreessens has worked in UW-Platteville Student Health Services for 20 years and said she enjoys working with students on campus – a setting that is very different than a hospital.
“The students are young, educated and interested in their health, and that’s really a plus,” said Dreessens. “Also, this is usually one of the first times they have been independent in their health care; so helping them maneuver the health care system and understanding what it is all about is something I really enjoy working with them on.”
Dreessens’ specialty is reproductive health and she said she values working with women on issues of contraceptives, sexual assault and safety and hopes to provide a safe environment for women to discuss these issues.
“I was very surprised and it means a lot to me,” said Dreessens of winning the award. “When your peers nominate you, that says a lot. I really appreciate their support and couldn’t do a lot of things without their support; so it’s not just me, it’s really a team effort.”
Dreessens will be recognized during the university’s faculty and staff convocation on Aug. 28.
