Donny McCaslin to Perform with Jazz Combos

November 11, 2003

PLATTEVILLE - Elite New York jazz artist Donny McCaslin will once again be performing with the Pioneer Jazz Combos.

According to Joe Caploe, director of percussion and jazz studies at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, McCaslin is "one of New York's finest tenor sax players." McCaslin was a guest artist at the UWP Jazz Festival in 1999 and recently notified Caploe that he would be performing in Chicago on Nov. 24. McCaslin commented on his enjoyable experiences at UWP and his desire to perform again with the jazz groups.

Aside from featuring McCaslin, the concert includes performances by four jazz combos each ranging in size from five to 10 players; as well as the Pioneer Jazz I Ensemble. Musical selections include genres such as blues, be bop, and funk. Jazz Combo I also plays a "variety of original tunes," said Caploe. A few outstanding pieces to listen for include the Horace Silver selections "Senior Blues" and "Tokyo Blues."

The concert is scheduled for Nov. 25 in the Pioneer Haus of the Pioneer Student Center. It beings at 7:30 p.m. and is free of charge. Having a world-class player like McCaslin at the combos concert combined with the Pioneer Haus atmosphere displays a relaxed environment that is more susceptible to the jazz ambience and feelings that the music invokes.
