The opening reception for “Root Causes: A UW-Platteville Art Faculty Exhibition” will take place on Wednesday, March 1, from 3-4:30 p.m. in Nohr Gallery. The annual art faculty exhibition features contemporary artworks created by UW-Platteville’s practicing studio art faculty and staff. This year’s exhibition will feature works by Jacob Bautista, Letha Kelsey, Greg Nelson and Scott Steder.

“Historically, the 'Faculty Show' has been an assemblage of the work the art faculty and staff have completed recently,” said Associate Professor of Art History Dr. Tyler Ostergaard. “The art program has faculty and staff with specializations in various areas of studio art and design. All of our studio faculty retain active practices, so the show has featured a variety of interesting and challenging work across media.”

Unlike years past, the art faculty started their creative process by selecting a theme for the show and submitting recent works with their interpretation of “root causes.”

“Root causes is a broad theme, but by its nature it’s a theme that asks us to think about connections – connections that may be evident, connections that may be obscured,” said Ostergaard.

To further explore these connections, a gallery talk will also be given by Ostergaard during the opening reception at 3:30 p.m.

“We are hoping that by visiting the show, visitors will be able to see how the works build upon one another and bring out new ideas. Art often provokes unexpected connections, and we are hoping the theme will facilitate those moments.”

The Harry and Laura Nohr Gallery is located in the lower level of Ullsvik Hall on the University of Wisconsin-Platteville main campus. The gallery is free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
