Partner Spotlight: UW-System Schools

December 1, 2015

As one of the few departments at UW-Platteville that serves every other department, ITS must partner with a wide array of individuals and groups to make sure the campus’s needs are understood and our strategic goals are met. Sometimes the best way to meet UW-Platteville’s needs is to collaborate with other institutions. This month we acknowledge a few System partnerships that help us meet the needs of the campus community.

UW SysNet

UW SysNet is a high bandwidth, low latency network connecting UW System Administration and all UW universities and colleges. Since going live in 2014 the network has allowed all partners to utilize the expertise at each campus to our mutual benefit, making things like off-site backup, off-site application hosting, and off-site VoIP systems possible.

UW-Oshkosh provides rack space for some of UW-Platteville’s back-up equipment, allowing us to have data stored off-site in case of emergency.

UW-Green Bay

UW-Green Bay has begun hosting WebTMA (The Maintenance Authority), a web-based version of software used by Facilities Management for work orders, asset inventory (equipment), and preventative maintenance. Green Bay has more experience using WebTMA and is considered a leader within the UW-System.
Until now, UW-Platteville has used TMA Enterprise, the on-premises version, and, in fact, was one of the company’s first customers in Wisconsin in the early 90s.  However, in recent years, campus experts in TMA have left. Contracting with UW-GB to host and administer WebTMA allows us to utilize their expertise with this version while reducing our costs for server support.

As reported in Spring 2015, UW-Whitewater began hosting UW-Platteville’s unified communications environment and servers earlier this year.  UW-W has several years’ experience with Cisco products and, as an institute of higher education, has a good understanding of what we do on our campus and why. Benefits of this arrangement not only include money saved on hardware and consulting fees but also redundancy (back-up) of critical services i.e. call processing, instant messaging, and voicemail as well as duplicate servers.  The partnership provides opportunity for shared services in the future for additional cost savings.

ITS will continue to explore a variety of solutions and partnerships in order to provide secure and cost-effective services that meet UW-Platteville’s needs.
