Office 2016 and Windows 10 updates on 2016 schedule
Spurred by recent vendor decisions, ITS will be upgrading all campus computers to Office 2016 and Windows 10 by the end of this calendar year.
Computer labs including virtual environments
General access labs in the Bears Den and Karrmann Library will be upgraded to Windows 10 and Office 2016 over Spring Break 2016. Currently, these labs are running Office 2013 on Windows 8.
The remaining department computer labs and virtual desktops will be transitioned over Summer 2016.
Employee workstations and university-issued devices
The Office upgrade on employee workstations which began in Fall 2015 will continue with all Office 2010 machines being upgraded directly to Office 2016 instead of Office 2013 going forward. ITS will notify employees before the transition begins; no preparation is necessary.
Employees currently using Office 2013 on their workstations or university-issued devices may opt to install Office 2016 any time through Software Center. Note: No preparation is needed before this process begins; however, it will clear any applications or files you have pinned to your task bar.
Windows 10 is also available for download through Software Center. Look for Next under “Applications”. Note: This upgrade requires no preparation but will take approximately 45 minutes to complete.
Any remaining employee workstations will be upgraded to Office 2016 and Windows 10 automatically in Fall 2016.
Why not Office 2013 and Windows 8?
Microsoft has made several decisions that informed our choices. In 2015 Microsoft released Windows 10 and began pushing the upgrade to personal computers. Students and employees are likely already working with this operating system at home.
Last month, Microsoft announced all Office 365 accounts would upgrade to Office 2016 beginning February 9, 2016. Investigation and testing revealed there is little difference between the basic functionality of Office 2013 and Office 2016, though 2016 does offer additional enhancements. The “jumps” to Office 2016 and Windows 10 enable ITS to bring UW-Platteville up to the standard students will experience at home and in the workplace.
