Frequently Asked Questions

Q.  When hiring an employee, what is the appropriate start date?

A. Employees paid on a biweekly basis always begin on the first day of the pay period.  This ensures that the employee will be paid correctly and on time, that benefits are processed in a timely manner, and will aid the employee in entering leave request and/or hours. Employees paid on a monthly basis would ideally begin on the first of the month, however, this is not always possible.

Q.  Are there any interview questions that are required?

A.  A diversity question is required for all Faculty and Academic staff interviews.  In general, this should be a question that relates the candidate’s commitment to (or experience with) diversity in relation to the functions of the position and/or interactions with students or peers. If you need assistance with developing diversity questions, please contact the Human Resource Talent Management Specialists for assistance.

All employee recruitments must include a question related to the candidates’ eligibility to work in the U.S. The following question is included as a screening question for all applicants:
Are you legally authorized to work in the U.S.?

Q.  Do we sponsor visas for employees?

A. A decision was made to sponsor Visas for Faculty appointments at the expense of the hiring department. We DO NOT sponsor Visas for Academic or University Staff positions, including Lecturers.

We often have a number of foreign nationals that apply for Academic Staff and Faculty positions.  Because we DO NOT sponsor Visas for Academic or University Staff positions and DO sponsor Visas for Faculty, committees must ask these questions of all finalists during the interview process:
Are you legally authorized to work in the US?
If not, what is your current immigration status?
If so, will you now or in the future require sponsorship for an employment visa status?

Q.  How do I write a job announcement?

A. There are templates available on the Human Resource Employee Recruitment Resources page to aid in writing announcements. You will find that an up-to-date position description is a very helpful in writing a job announcement.
If you have a question that isn't answered here, please send an email to humanresources@uwplatt.edu.
