Built in 1957 as a residence hall, Royce is now utilized by a variety of departments including Residence Life, Study Abroad, Student Health Services and University Counseling Services. The Confucius Institute, dedicated to enhancing the knowledge of the Chinese language and culture around the world, is also located in Royce Hall. It is the only one in Wisconsin and one of 70 in the United States, among 353 worldwide. The building is named after Dr. Asa M. Royce, who served as president of the Platteville Normal School from 1916–42. Under his leadership, the Platteville State Normal School became the Platteville State Teachers College in 1927.
