Matthew Castelaz, from New Berlin, Wisconsin, is a senior software engineering major with a minor in mathematics. Castelaz, who transferred to UW-Platteville after his first semester of college, originally considered a couple different universities before choosing UW-Platteville. “I was looking for a great engineering school. It came down to the cost of education and the value of the education that we are provided with here at UW-Platteville,” said Castelaz.

Castelaz originally transferred into UW-Platteville’s Department of Electrical Engineering, but he soon realized that he preferred working with software. While studying in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering, Castelaz feels that he has gained knowledge and experience that are relevant to his future career in software engineering. “We’re getting hands-on experience doing the things that we’ll be doing when we graduate and the faculty members provide us with resources and support,” said Castelaz. He has worked as an intern in software engineering with Kohl’s for the past two summers.

Currently, Castelaz holds the position of UW-Platteville student body president. He has used this position as an opportunity to expand his leadership and communication skills both personally and professionally. Castelaz said, “One of the biggest challenges in software engineering is communication with the customer. When you’re building a software product, the customer doesn’t always know exactly what they want right away. You have to find ways to effectively communicate with them to figure out what they’re looking for. That has translated well as student body president as it is a position where effective communication is a key to success.”

Castelaz plans to graduate in spring 2017 and has accepted a position working with Google.
